What 'Vegan' Actually Means in Beauty
A vegan beauty product contains no animal-derived ingredients. No beeswax. No lanolin. No carmine (a red pigment derived from crushed beetles). No collagen sourced from fish or bovine tissue. No keratin extracted from feathers or hooves. The definition is clear: if it came from an animal, it is not vegan.
'Cruelty-Free' Is Not the Same Thing
A common misconception is that vegan and cruelty-free are interchangeable. They are not. Cruelty-free means the product — and its ingredients — have not been tested on animals. A product can be cruelty-free but contain animal-derived ingredients (and therefore not be vegan). It can also be vegan but have been tested on animals in markets that require it (China, historically, though this is changing). The gold standard is both: vegan and cruelty-free, verified by independent certification bodies such as Leaping Bunny or PETA.
Reading an Ingredient Label
The most reliable way to verify a product's vegan status is to read the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) list. Common animal-derived ingredients to watch for include: Cera Alba (beeswax), Lanolin (sheep's wool fat), Keratin (animal hair/feathers), Carmine or CI 75470 (crushed beetles), Collagen and Elastin (often animal-sourced), Hyaluronic Acid (traditionally from rooster combs, though plant-derived versions now exist).
Third-Party Certification
When in doubt, look for the bunny. The Leaping Bunny Programme and PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies certification are the most rigorous third-party verifications available. Brands that carry these marks have been audited at every level of their supply chain.
